Standard Micro posts lower 2Q profit; revenue up

— Semiconductor maker Standard Microsystems Corp. on Tuesday reported lower net income for its fiscal second quarter as higher expenses offset an 8 percent revenue boost.

Its outlook for the current quarter also fell below Wall Street’s expectations and the company’s shares tumbled in after-hours trading.

Standard Microsystems posted net income of $11.9 million, or 51 cents a share, for the quarter ended Aug. 31, down from $12.9 million, or 57 cents a share, a year earlier.

After adjusting for one-time items like restructuring charges, the company said it earned 36 cents a share in the latest quarter. That missed analysts’ estimates by a penny, according to a FactSet survey.

Among higher expenses was a rise in research and development spending to $22.6 million from $19.8 million a year before. Its adjusted gross margin was 54.6 percent, down from 57.4 percent.

It reported revenue of $112.6 million, up from $104.1 million a year earlier, and in line with analysts’ estimates. T

Unleashing the Power of Franchise Small Businesses and Aspiring Entrepreneurs

As the nation pursues economic recovery and a return to job creation and growth, the International Franchise Association led by President & CEO Steve Caldeira is partnering with leaders of the small business, financial services and policy communities to unleash the power of franchise small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs.

Accessible credit is needed to create jobs and spur economic expansion. A FRANdata study commissioned by the IFA indicated a credit gap of 20% or $2 billion facing franchise small businesses. This estimate correlates with 80,000 jobs not created in 2011 because the demand went unmet.   Recent enhancements in SBA lending, including permanent, increased loan funds made available by Congress , Rep. Sam Graves , Chairmen of the Senate and House Small Business Committees, respectively, along with industry leaders to begin a dialogue aimed at breaking down barriers to small business credit flow and job creation.   The IFA has since launched a Credit Access Campaign spearheaded by a Credit Access Working Group comprised of partner representatives. New York hits texting drivers hard in August

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo pointed out last week that harsher laws against texting while driving in the state have led to a significant increase in the number of tickets handed out to violating drivers.

August, which was the first full month that the toughened texting-while-driving laws were in place, saw more than twice as many tickets doled out than the previous August.

NY police issued tickets to 1,082 drivers for texting-while driving infractions in August after averaging 427 tickets per month in the first half of 2011.

“We were serious when this law passed: texting while driving is illegal and the law is being enforced, so don’t do it,” Governor Cuomo said.

The harsher legislation made texting-while-driving a primary offense, which means that police officers can now pull over a driver solely for a texting violation. In addition, the updated laws also increased the fine for violating drivers to $150 and increased the penalty from a two- to a three-point offense.

The penalty increase to a three-point offense could potentially have auto insurance implications for some NY drivers. That
