Bursaries more attractive than fee-waivers?

A University of East London bursary scheme aims to solve the problem of fee-waivers no longer being attractive, due to the increase in tuition fee cap and the likely hood that many students will never repay the full cost of their degree. Every student who successfully completes their first semester at UEL receives a progress bursary; a card loaded with £500, which can be spent on books, stationery, art materials, IT products, field trips, printing, and even nursery and accommodation costs. They get more when they complete further semesters, to a total value of £1,100; but not only that, parents and other sponsors can load money on to the card too. Stuart Smith, head of marketing and student recruitment at UEL, says that linking release of the money to students progressing through their course nearly halved the university’s dropout rate in the three years after it was introduced. The Dark Side of Following Your Passions

The other day I presented you with the case for following your passions in your 20s. As with most financial topics, theres another side to everything. I like to look at both sides of the argument so that you guys are aware of the worst case scenario or what could go wrong. When it comes to working on your own projects in your 20s, theres also a few setbacks that need to be considered. Its not a great idea for everyone.

Whats the dark side of following your passions in your 20s?

You could fail working on your own.

Nobody wants to fail. Even though failure is often romanticized in our society, it still totally sucks. The main issue with failing is that youll lose out on valuable years of experience in the field. This will put a huge hole on your resume, which youre going to have to explain to potential employers if you try to re-enter the workforce in your mid to late 20s.

Ive covered the idea of overcoming the fear of failure. W

Green Dot Prepaid Credit Card Review

The Green Dot prepaid Visa or MasterCard is arguably the most widely used prepaid credit card today. Youve likely seen the Green Dot card for sale at pharmacies, grocery stores, and even Walmart. Green Dot is a publicly traded company (NYSE:GDOT), and it sells about 1.5 million new prepaid cards every quarter. So its big. But is its prepaid card good?

To evaluate any prepaid credit card, there are two key factors to consider: (1) Features, and (2) fees. These arent the only factors. Customer service can be important if you tend to call your card company a lot. But features and fees are what set most cards apart, for better or worse.

Green Dots features are pretty basic. You can use the card anywhere that accepts MasterCard or Visa debit. The card can be used to make purchases online and to pay bills that accept debit cards (e.g., cell phone bill). And because of its large network of ATM machines, you can withdrawal money from your account at many ATMs without paying a fee.
